Calculating pre-2017 HECS-HELP debts

Calculating the HECS-HELP debt for a unit of study between 1 January 2012 and 31 December 2016

If the student has a HECS‑HELP debt and makes an upfront payment greater than or equal to $500 and less than 90% of element 384 (Total Amount Charged) the value for element 558 (HELP Debt) must equal element 384 (Total Amount Charged) – element 381 (Amount Paid Upfront) divided by 0.9 for all matching records.

If the student has a HECS‑HELP debt and makes an upfront payment of less than $500 and 90% of element 384 (Total Amount Charged) the value for element 558 (HELP Debt) must equal element 384 (Total Amount Charged) – element 381 (Amount Paid Upfront).

Note: Matching records are identified by element 313 (Student Identification Code), element 307 (Course Code) and element 489 (Unit of Study Census Date).


Calculating the Unit of study HELP debt prior to 1 January 2012

If the student has a HECS‑HELP debt and makes an upfront payment greater than or equal to $500 and less than 80% of element 384 (Total Amount Charged) the value for element 558 (HELP Debt) must equal element 384 (Total Amount Charged) – element 381 (Amount Paid Upfront) divided by 0.8 for all matching records.

If the student has a HECS‑HELP debt and makes an upfront payment of less than $500 and 80% of element 384 (Total Amount Charged) the value for element 558 (HELP Debt) must equal element 384 (Total Amount Charged) – element 381 (Amount Paid Upfront).

Note: Matching records are identified by element 313 (Student Identification Code), element 307 (Course Code) and element 489 (Unit of Study Census Date).
