Timing, scope, structure and elements - FAQ 05

05. Where can I find out how to code a particular element?

For information on how to code an element:

  • Choose your collection from the top menu
  • Select the data requirements for the appropriate reporting year
  • Go to data elements
  • Select to view elements by file, name or number
  • Select the relevant data element
  • Read the coding notes to see how an element is coded

Each reporting year for a data collection includes a list of relevant data elements. There is information about each element and details about the type of data that should be included, the code format and a classification table. You can use these pages when preparing your data, or when you receive a validation error in HEPCAT.

For more information on elements see the glossary
