Coding notes

  • This data element is used to describe the discipline of the unit of study regardless of the course in which it may be undertaken.
  • Refer to: Appendix E – Field of Education Classification.
  • The discipline code of a unit of study (subject) reflects the specific subject content of the unit of study/subject, not the field of education assigned to the course in which the unit of study may be taken.
  • It should be coded to the detailed (six‑digit) level wherever possible. The same unit of study may be taken in various courses and should reflect the subject content.
